This blue boy was a first sighting for me yesterday on the deck railing where I scatter birdseed and peanuts daily. I'm thinking this is a juvenile blue jay because the adult jays are my best customers. They love those peanuts! Two things make me doubt my ID -- the missing black markings on throat and his tail seems rather long. Maybe he will develop the black markings and grow into his tail as he gets older? Regardless of his ID, loved that little topknot, round babyish head, and fluffy body.

Your cute bird is a Tufted Titmouse. They are adorable and your photos are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteA Perfect post for WBW!
ReplyDeleteThank you Eileen--so a Tufted Titmouse? My learning curve for bird ID is very steep but I love trying to figure out who they are. Just saw a Blue Tit on Andrew's post that had me wondering if I'd mis-IDed. :-)
ReplyDeleteyup, cute little tufted titmouse. :)
ReplyDeleteI so enjoy these little guys! Nice shots of what I think is one of the sweetest little birds.
ReplyDeleteNice shots! We only see Titmice during the winter when we have feeders out. They're flighty, nervous little things!
ReplyDeleteHow adorable! Now that the wonderful experts have ID'd him for you, I can drop by just to say I love your pictures. People on this meme have been so helpful to me too ..it's a great place to hang out.
ReplyDeletea lovely bird to see and photograph
ReplyDeleteGreat shots, Faye.
ReplyDeleteAccording to my Birds of Kentucky book "Tit" comes from a Scandinavian word meaning "little." Suffix "mouse" is derived from the Old English word mase meaning "bird." Translates "small bird." They are notorious for pulling hair from sleeping dogs, cats and squirrels to line their nests. (Sleep with one eye open, Chet!)
Says here the male will feed the female during courtship and nesting. Well, at least he buys her dinner first.
Very cute little bird - no matter what its called!
ReplyDeleteOh it's so cute!

ReplyDeleteNice shot!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
ReplyDeleteHi there - it a nice bird even if it's not what you first thought.
ReplyDeleteWhen I put a Willie Wagtail up some time ago, there were a couple of people who asked what its real name was! They thought I'd just called it Willie!
Cheers and thanks for linking to WBW.

I think it's a tufted titmouse....just guessing. Great series of images you've shared. Trust me, ID'ing some birds is VERY difficult. Some, look so similar to others.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever have any other bird photos to share, don't forget the Bird D'Pot on Saturday's. Each Saturday. The link to "I'd Rather B Birdin'" is on my sidebar.
