9.11.01

This was the New York skyline on September 1, 2001. I was in New York for a reunion with some old friends and we were on a Circle Line tour out to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty when my friend got this fateful shot.

I remember looking at all the wonderful backlit photos of immigrants on the upper level of the reception center of Ellis Island-faces from all over the world filled with hopes and dreams on coming to America.

Ten days later the New York skyline changed with one hateful strike--and so did we all.

I still can't believe it was ten years ago. This was something that shocked the world and I'm sure changed us all in some way.

My dad was one of those immigrants who sailed into New York Harbor. I wonder sometimes why people still want to come here.... but as bad as things get sometimes, it's still so much better than some of the other places people come from.
