Friday Fences - Snowy Kentucky

While driving from Shelbyville to Louisville on U.S. Route 60 in the early afternoon on Wednesday, I spotted this wintery scene that could be a great holiday card from Kentucky.  May be biased, but I think Kentucky is beautiful in all seasons. :-)

Friday Fences - Locust Grove Split Rail

Re-visiting historic Locust Grove farm, owned by the family of  George Rogers Clark in the early 1800s.  Clark was founder of Louisville, a Revolutionary War hero and explorer on the western Lewis and Clark expedition. The farm is about 20 minutes drive from downtown Louisville, Kentucky.  I've used these photos of the split rail fence before, but thought they might be interesting in a collage to see how the rails would look side by side when shot from different perspectives.

Friday Fences & InSPIREd Sunday - Small Town Charm

This is the First Presbyterian Church right on main street in the small historic town of Shelbyville.  The church is small and cleanly designed.  I haven't been in the sanctuary, but would think that the light would be fantastic through that front window.  The fence surrounding the church is wrought iron in keeping with the church's simple architecture.

Beside the church there's a small garden where the ornamental grass and peeling bark of the river birch trees take center stage in the fall:

Friday Fences - for the Birds

Still more fences from the Historic Garden Tour of Old Louisville--Garden 14 made a special effort to welcome the birds. Here are a few closeups of the different bird houses and fence decorations. (click on the collages to enlarge)

Friday Fences - Memory Garden

An ornate wrought iron fence surrounds a small, intimate garden planted in memory of members of the Louisville Women's Club for their work on behalf of the community. This memory garden was featured on the recent Old Louisville Garden Tour.

In a carriage house attached to the garden, the Club runs Carriage Trade where fine home furnishing, jewelry, and clothing can be purchased. Proceeds of the sales are used for annual projects. The red fleur de lis napkin weight and three Star of David vases caught my eye. As did the cast iron dog profile over the carriage house door!

Friday Fences - Fields of Gold

Back in the spring I shared quite a few photos of this riding stable/farm in eastern Jefferson County.  Recently  went back to see how it had changed with the summer and found the pastures surrounded by "fields of gold."  Still the classic Kentucky black-painted wooden fence and--even better--Spotted Pony was still in the field.

Friday Fences - very Kentucky

click on collage to get a close look

This fence surrounds Fleur de lis Farm on the historic Wolf Pen Branch Road in eastern Jefferson County.  The road is narrow, winding, and lined with mature trees.  This fence uses two fencing materials --dry stone and black-painted boards--common in Kentucky.  The fleur de lis is the official symbol for Louisville, recognizing our early connections to France.  And, at the entrance gate to the farm, this is about the cutest mail box I've seen.

Friday Fences - Quirky

How about a "Peace Out" sign from the 1960s decorating a garden fence as an example of quirky? I spotted this oddity on the Old Louisville Garden Tour last month. Linking to Friday Fences at Life According to Jan and Jer .

Friday Fences - Old Louisville Hidden Gardens

This is the sign marking Garden 4 of the Old Louisville Hidden Garden Tour.  Each of the 15 gardens that I toured last week was marked by these creatively and humorously designed stick people which gave a hint of the personality of the gardener--and garden--you were about to see.  All of the gardens in this old neighborhood are tucked behind fences .  The fences are just as ornamental as the gardens:

Garden 4 had a weathered silvery gray wooden fence accented, at this time of the year, by plantings of bright pink Oriental lilies, climbing vines, planted pots and garden art:

Here are a couple of mosaics of the garden (click on image to enlarge) :

Clockwise:  cast iron planter, lily pond, mosaic glass gazing ball

Clockwise:  bird bath among the hydrangeas, fence art, topiary puppy, mixed coleus and impatiens

Friday Fences and a Waterfall

Spent a happy few hours this afternoon exploring an area of Jefferson County that I hadn't been through.  It's an historic corridor that has great old homes, "settled" landscaping like this man made waterfall and stream, all enclosed by the classic stained board fence.  Very peaceful and beautiful setting--and this is only what could be seen from the main road.  Imagine what treasures are hidden on the property!

Friday Fences - White Pickets, Dogwoods & New Roses

Today, my friend Sally spotted this gorgeous yard that just sings spring in Norton Commons.  Luckily, I had my camera since I was fence "hunting" after we finished our pilates session.  So many good lessons in this landscaping--a simple white fence that complements the house; substantial fence end posts; a clean picket design; small dogwood trees in each corner that branch over the fence to blend with new carefree roses that will probably bloom all summer long--right now the new growth looks wonderful with the dogwoods.

Viewing clockwise, here are full-sized photos from the collage:

Closeup view of fence, dogwood, and rose in bloom--smashing combo!

Dogwood blooms almost hiding the fence end posts.

Good idea of the proportions tree to fence to rose bushes.

Street view of the planting --sorry for the shadows, it was high noon!

Yet another view of the winning combo!

And finally, a perfect "bouquet"--blush pink with pale yellow-green centers.

How much fun is legal when you're "gardening" with your camera?  Apparently a lot! :-) Linking to Friday Fences at Life According to Jan and Jer .

Friday Fences - Old Stink Eye

What could this be staring at the photographer between the fence pickets?

While she got the stink eye, here's what the photographer was trying to capture: an all-time favorite spring combo of lilacs blooms and Japanese bloodgood maple leaves.

Friday Fences and a Spotted Pony

Yesterday I took a break from a very stressful week of care giving for a very high maintenance older sister--sound familiar?--and did a quick photo shoot at a local riding stable.  It was sunny and windy and the horses were enjoying the day too.  This spotted baby was my favorite.  Here at the fence flirting with the camera:

Just hanging over the fence chatting with me:

Fences, spring trees against a bright blue sky:

Friday Fences - Willows Say Spring

A sure sign of spring - the willow tree in the park is soft green, almost leaving (leafing?) out.  And there's just enough fence in this photo to qualify for Friday Fences, I hope. Since our host Janis at Life According to Jan and Jer is so fond of wagon wheels, maybe she'll let me pass this week. :-)

Friday Skywatch and Fences - Spring Dawn

A welcome sight earlier this week.  After the first two weeks of spring bringing only cold, rainy, snowy weather, finally a promise of sunshine in the dawn sky.

Also glad to see that my neighbor's forsythia blooms have survived the cold temps.  However, those boards, blocks, and logs crammed under the fence do not make me nearly as happy.  The entire perimeter of the fence looks like this--all due to Chet the Digger's winter's work.  Right now the only remedy I can think of is a "pawectomy".  Your suggestions?

Friday Fences - Still More KY Horse Farms

Early March drive on scenic U.S. 60 between Frankfort and Versailles (the Kentucky one).  I was a back seat passenger and we didn't slow down for photo ops.  Still, good examples of classic fences common on Kentucky's fine thoroughbred horse farms.

Friday Fences - Russian Village

September 2012 - these photos of  village fences were taken through a tour bus window as we traveled through the northern Russian countryside to the town of Kirillov to visit the 14th century Monastery of St. Cyril.  This part of Russia is known for its traditional woodworking.  That skill is reflected in the decorative designs on very simple village houses and fences, with this blue-green being a favorite paint color:

Sometimes in the poorer villages only the fronts of homes would be painted with rest of the house left to weather naturally.  This is the back part of  a village as seen from the White Lake:
